Tropical ant found in London

Our client observed sporadic swarms of small insects congregating around the shower areas of a hotel between November and February. Initially suspected to be flies, these insects exhibited characteristics resembling both ants and wasps, making identification challenging. Measuring only a few millimetres in size, their unique appearance required further investigation by our team.

Additional areas of the property were inspected, revealing an issue with drain flies originating from the basement sump. At this stage, it was unclear whether this was connected to the reported insect activity in the shower areas. To determine any potential link, a specimen was collected for further identification and analysis

Positive identification of the rare Hypoponera ergatandria in London, UK

To ensure accurate identification, we enlisted the expertise of a local entomologist. Following a thorough examination, the insect was confirmed to be Hypoponera ergatandria. With only five reported cases in the UK, misidentification of this species is common. The findings were officially logged with BWARS for record-keeping and further study.

Sump with filter fly infestation in London

It was determined that the most effective treatment approach should target the ants' food source rather than the ants themselves. Hypoponera ergatandria can feed on the eggs and larvae of filter flies, meaning that eliminating this pest would effectively remove their primary food supply. Additionally, monitoring was recommended to identify any other potential sources, such as Springtails, ensuring a comprehensive and proactive management strategy.

Dead filter flies in a basement in London

Before the treatment plan could be implemented, the swarms ceased, and no further sightings were reported. By late February, the activity had completely subsided. The client was informed that a recurrence was likely in November, based on seasonal patterns. Given the current absence of activity, they opted to hold off on any intervention for now, with plans to reassess the situation towards the end of the year.
